Railway workshop tokens of this type were issued as internal scrip — redeemable only at the company canteen or store — allowing employers to advance wages without releasing spendable currency into the broader economy. The Eisenbahn Haupt-Werkstatt at Ratibor (now Racibórz, in present-day Poland) was a major Prussian state railway maintenance facility, and its workers would have encountered these iron pieces as a routine part of daily life in the shops. Iron was chosen not for convenience but for deliberate inconvertibility; it made forgery pointless and hoarding unattractive.
