Philip V of Hanau-Lichtenberg ruled a fragmented territory straddling the Rhine, and his minor silver issues of the 1590s reflect the chaotic monetary environment of the late Holy Roman Empire, where dozens of petty lordships exercised independent minting rights. At under half a gram, these tiny pfennig were produced in the years immediately preceding the currency reforms that would eventually consolidate and regulate such small denominations across the Empire's western territories.
