| Beschrijving voorzijde | Crowned quartered shield bearing the arms of the Palatinate: a lion rampant to the left occupying the dexter half, and a roundel (orb) occupying the sinister half, the whole surmounted by a small crown. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, itself surrounded by a broad outer ring of large pellets forming a decorative border. The fields are plain and unlettered, consistent with the small denomination. The design is struck in the hammered technique on a slightly irregular flan typical of late 15th- to early 16th-century Rhenish pfennigs. |

Philip I ruled the Electoral Palatinate for over half a century, and his small silver pfennigs span a minting period that coincides almost exactly with the Italian Wars — a conflict that reshaped the financial demands on German princes and pushed many smaller denominations toward debasement. Whether pieces from the early or late end of this range show compositional drift is a question the Memme collection catalogers left open.
