Fritz Kohm operated as a merchant in Pforzheim during the early 1920s, when Germany's municipal and commercial token coinage exploded out of necessity. The Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate small-denomination coin drove thousands of private businesses and municipalities to issue their own emergency money — Kleingeldersatz — with varying degrees of official tolerance. Zinc was the pragmatic choice: cheap, available, and fast to strike in quantity.
Pforzheim's goldsmithing and jewelry industry made it an unusual host for such mundane scrip.
