Ottokar II held the Duchy of Austria from 1251 through his defeat at Marchfeld in 1278 — the battle that effectively ended Přemyslid ambitions in the region and handed the Habsburgs their foothold. These small bracteate-style pfennigs circulated under one of the most expansive reigns in Central European medieval history, during which Ottokar controlled territory stretching from Bohemia to the Adriatic. The dating range of 1251–1276 predates his formal loss of Austrian lands, which Rudolf of Habsburg forced him to relinquish in 1276 before the final military confrontation two years later.
