Ottokar II acquired Austria in 1251 by marrying the Babenberg heiress Margaret, and his subsequent minting activity there marked a sharp administrative break from Babenberg practice. The Viennese pfennig had been debased repeatedly in the decades prior; Ottokar's issues show a modest recovery in silver content, consistent with his broader effort to centralize and stabilize revenue across his expanding domains.
He held Austria until Rudolf of Habsburg defeated and killed him at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278 — one of the most consequential dynastic reversals in medieval Central European history.
