Obverse description Full-length frontal effigy of a bishop in pontifical vestments, holding a crozier in his right hand. The figure is rendered in a flat, stylised Romanesque manner characteristic of late 13th-century German ecclesiastical coinage. A patriarchal cross appears above the bishop's head. A partial legend is visible along the right margin of the coin.

Additional information

Otto of Rietberg held the see of Paderborn from 1277 to 1307, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the local nobility and ongoing struggles to assert episcopal authority over the diocese's temporal holdings. Bracteate and thin-flan silver pfennige of this period from the Westphalian ecclesiastical mints are frequently found in hoard context — the regional instability of the late thirteenth century prompted repeated concealment of small silver currency.

The Weingärtner Corvey reference locates this piece within a tightly documented Westphalian series.
