Oerlinghausen is a small town in the Teutoburg Forest, and Carl Weber & Co. was a textile manufacturer — almost certainly a linen or canvas operation, given the regional industry. Like hundreds of German firms during the First World War, they issued notgeld coinage in 1917 when zinc and other base metals were being commandeered for munitions, and official small change had effectively vanished from circulation. Company scrip of this kind was technically illegal but was tolerated by authorities who had no practical alternative to offer workers needing change for canteen and payroll transactions.
