The Bank deutscher Länder issued coinage during the brief window between the June 1948 currency reform — which replaced the Reichsmark with the Deutsche Mark overnight — and the establishment of the Bundesbank in 1957. Trial pieces from this period were produced in multiple metals as the new authority tested striking parameters before committing to production compositions. A silver obverse trial for a one-pfennig denomination is a peculiar artifact: the circulating issue was struck in zinc-coated steel, making this piece a working document of the minting process rather than anything intended for commerce.
