Mittweida's textile industry boomed in the mid-nineteenth century, and factory token coinage — Fabrikmarken — became a practical solution when small-denomination Pfennig coinage was chronically short in circulation. The Weissthaler Actien-Spinnerei issued these zinc pieces for use within their spinning mill, likely as wage tokens redeemable at the company store rather than as change in any broader commercial sense. Zinc was the obvious choice: cheap, easily struck, and nobody was going to hoard a 1 Pfennig factory token.
