Kappel Maschinenfabrik was a textile machinery manufacturer in Chemnitz, Saxony, that issued notgeld coinage during the acute small-change shortage of the early 1920s. Factory-issued pfennig pieces of this type circulated as internal currency — redeemable at the company canteen or store — effectively subsidizing wages at a moment when the Reichsbank could not keep fractional coinage in circulation fast enough to meet demand. Zinc was the only practical option by then; copper and nickel had long since been redirected elsewhere.
