John Reinhard III ruled Hanau-Lichtenberg until his death in 1736, at which point the county passed to the French Landgrave Louis VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt through inheritance — effectively ending Hanau-Lichtenberg's existence as a distinct polity. Small silver pfennig issues from his reign are survivorship curiosities: struck in tiny quantities for local circulation in a territory that would soon be absorbed entirely, they saw limited use and consequently appear in a wider range of conditions than their modest face value might suggest.
