Solms-Hohensolms was one of the fragmented lines produced by the repeated partition of the Solms comital house, a process that left the Wetterau region of the Holy Roman Empire dotted with tiny lordships of diminishing financial resources. John Louis — Johann Ludwig — ruled a territory barely capable of sustaining independent coinage, yet the Imperial monetary constitution nominally permitted even minor counts to strike copper pfennige for local circulation. At 0.15 grams, these were among the lightest coins legally produced within the Empire.
