The Bishopric of Dorpat occupied a precarious position within the Livonian Confederation during the early sixteenth century, squeezed between the ambitions of the Teutonic Order and growing pressure from Muscovy following Ivan III's aggressive campaigns into the region. Johannes IV Duesborg held the see from 1510 until his death in 1515, a tenure defined more by political maneuvering than ecclesiastical reform. This pfennig belongs to the final two years of his episcopate, struck as the broader Livonian monetary system was beginning to fragment under the strain of conflicting issuing authorities across the Confederation's constituent states.
