Johann II von Reisberg governed the Archbishopric of Salzburg during a period of chronic tension between the archbishops and the Habsburg dukes over control of alpine trade revenues. Small silver pfennigs of this type circulated primarily within the Salzburg basin, where the archbishopric maintained its own monetary authority independent of the surrounding territorial lords — an arrangement that made even the smallest denominations politically loaded objects.
