| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a quartered heraldic shield: the dexter half bears a rampant lion to sinister, while the sinister half displays three horizontal bars, together forming the combined arms of the Archbishopric of Salzburg and the personal arms of Archbishop Johann II von Reisberg. The shield is set within a plain round border on an unadorned field. The coin exhibits the irregular, slightly buckled flan characteristic of medieval hammered coinage. Johann II von Reisberg governed the Archbishopric of Salzburg during a period of chronic tension between the archbishops and the Habsburg dukes over control of alpine trade revenues. Small silver pfennigs of this type circulated primarily within the Salzburg basin, where the archbishopric maintained its own monetary authority independent of the surrounding territorial lords — an arrangement that made even the smallest denominations politically loaded objects.
