Hohensalza — the German name for what is now Inowrocław, Poland — was administered as part of the Prussian Province of Posen, a territory Germany had held since the partitions of Poland in the late eighteenth century. This notgeld piece was issued in 1917 as the imperial war economy stripped copper and other metals from civilian circulation, forcing municipalities across occupied and domestic territories to produce their own emergency coinage in whatever material remained available. Zinc was the default fallback for dozens of such district issues that year.
