The Bishopric of Minden's coinage authority in the early sixteenth century was persistently contested — the chapter and its prince-bishops operated under chronic pressure from the Wittelsbach and Hohenzollern spheres encroaching on Westphalian ecclesiastical territories. Henry III of Schauenburg held the see from 1491 until his death in 1508, and this pfennig falls in the penultimate year of his episcopate.
