Comments

Issued by the inspection authority overseeing prisoner-of-war camps within the III Army Corps district, this note was part of a controlled internal currency system used across German PoW camps during the First World War. Camp money of this type was deliberately restricted — prisoners could earn and spend it within the wire, but it had no value outside, which suited both the military administration and the broader German economy under wartime strain.

Kirchhain printer Ambrosius Co. G.m.b.H. supplied a surprising number of these camp issues, suggesting something close to a specialist contract. The watermark is an unusual security investment for what amounts to internal scrip worth a single pfennig.
