| Obverse description | Central field bears the crowned municipal arms of Hamm (Westfalen): a quartered shield displaying the town's heraldic devices, surmounted by a mural crown rendered in low relief. The arms are set against a plain field and enclosed by a continuous border of raised beads following the octagonal periphery. The circular legend STADT HAMM (WESTF.) arcs around the lower portion of the shield, reading from left to right in bold Latin capitals. |

Hamm issued zinc notgeld in 1917 under the same wartime pressures that pushed hundreds of German municipalities into emergency coinage — copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort, and the Reichsbank could not fill the gap in small change. Zinc was the compromise material, cheap and available but prone to corrosion, which accounts for the surface degradation seen on most survivors.
