Obverse description The rampant horse of Brunswick leaps to the left in high relief at the center of the field, serving as the heraldic symbol of the duchy. Above the horse appears the interlaced royal monogram GW (for Georg Wilhelm), rendered in a decorative cipher. A horizontal line divides the lower portion of the field, below which the date 1689 is inscribed in Arabic numerals. The coin is enclosed within a plain inner circle and a milled outer border.
