The numeral 'V' appears in the lower field beneath the monogram, denoting Georg V as the fifth of that name. Decorative foliate scroll flourishes flank the base of the monogram on either side. Hannover's copper pfennig coinage of this period was a holdover from the pre-Zollverein monetary patchwork that still plagued the German states well into the 1860s. George V, blind from the age of fourteen following a childhood accident, ruled a kingdom that would cease to exist entirely in 1866 when Prussia annexed Hannover outright after the Austro-Prussian War — making this among the final pfennig issues of an independent Hanoverian state. Production ended abruptly with annexation, and the entire series was superseded by Prussian coinage within months.
