Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg exercised coinage rights as an imperial county during the early Thirty Years' War, a period when small copper pfennig issues proliferated across the fragmented German states partly to exploit the monetary chaos of the Kipper- und Wipperzeit — the currency debasement crisis of roughly 1619–1623 in which hundreds of minor authorities clipped, debased, and overissued coinage at ruinous rates. George V ruled the county from 1607 until his death in 1631. At 0.18 g, this piece represents the absolute floor of practical coinage.
