| 裏面の説明 | Three-line denomination inscription arranged in the center of a plain field: the numeral '1' on the uppermost line, 'PFENNIG' on the second line, and the date '1838' on the third line, all in bold serif lettering. The reverse is unadorned save for a dentillated border encircling the edge. The stark, unembellished layout is characteristic of minor coinage of the German states in the mid-nineteenth century. |

Mecklenburg-Strelitz was among the smallest and most financially marginal of the German states, and its copper pfennig issues of the 1830s reflect a mint operation that could barely justify its own existence. The state relied heavily on the Schwerin facilities of neighboring Mecklenburg-Schwerin for much of its actual striking capacity. George, who ruled from 1816 until his death in 1860, presided over a duchy so diminutive that its coinage program was correspondingly sparse — the 1838 pfennig is one of relatively few issues attributable to his reign.
