Anton Schlüter operated as a private merchant or tradesman in the Freising-München region, and this zinc pfennig is a notgeld-style trade token rather than official state coinage — issued to address the chronic small-change shortage that plagued German commerce during and after the First World War. Zinc was the default material for emergency issues of this type, as copper and nickel had long since been requisitioned for the war effort.
