Frederick William II inherited Prussian finances already strained by Frederick the Great's near-continuous warfare, and the billon pfennig issued under his reign reflects a monetary system scraping the bottom of its silver content. At .052 fineness, these are coins in name more than in metal. The king's fiscal mismanagement — he died leaving Prussia with debts his son Frederick William III spent years untangling — is legible in the alloy itself.
