Obverse description Centrally placed shield bearing the arms of Salzburg — a divided escutcheon featuring the characteristic episcopal heraldic device — struck within a round border. The design is rendered in the crude, bold style typical of late medieval hammered pfennigs, with the shield occupying most of the flan. The irregular planchet and flat strike are characteristic of mid-15th century Salzburg coinage.

Additional information

Frederick IV of Emmerberg governed the Bishopric of Salzburg during a period of sustained tension between the archiepiscopal see and the Habsburg duchy, with territorial disputes repeatedly straining relations throughout his tenure. Small billon issues like this pfennig functioned as the workhorse of local exchange in the Alpine markets and toll stations that made Salzburg economically significant far beyond its ecclesiastical role.

The CNA classification places this squarely among the better-documented Salzburg pfennig series, though die variation within the 1441–1452 run is considerable.
