| Aanvullende informatie |
Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was one of the more administratively coherent of the Ernestine Saxon duchies, though Frederick III's reign was largely unremarkable in monetary terms. The small copper pfennig issues of the 1770s served the lowest tier of daily commerce in a territory of modest size and population. Frederick died in 1772, leaving no male heir, which triggered the duchy's absorption into Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld — making his coinage a short terminal series by circumstance rather than design.
