Frederick II spent much of his reign south of the Alps, governing his Sicilian kingdom and feuding with a succession of popes, which left the German princes with unusual latitude to consolidate local minting rights. The bracteate and thin-flan pfennig issues of his German period are consequently regional in character, often attributable only by die study rather than explicit mint marks. Nessel 19 places this piece within the Hagenau mint sequence, an Alsatian imperial city Frederick favored and confirmed with privileges in 1214.
