Frederick II had little patience for small copper coinage — his monetary reforms of the early 1750s were driven primarily by the demands of financing the Seven Years' War buildup, and the pfennig denominations were struck more out of commercial necessity than royal interest. The Berlin and Magdeburg mints both contributed to this issue, which accounts for the die variety spread documented across the Schrötter references.
