| 背面描述 | The reverse bears a bold multi-line inscription in the field reading the denomination and monetary designation, arranged in three horizontal lines: '1' above 'PFENNIG', followed by 'SCHEIDE' and 'MUNZ', with the date below. The lettering is in large raised capital Roman characters. The coin's milled edge is visible at the periphery, and the date appears in the lower portion of the field beneath the inscription. |

Frederick Charles Joseph von Erthal became Archbishop-Elector of Mainz in 1774 and proved an unusually reform-minded prince of the Church, aligning himself with Josephinist administrative ideas at a time when most ecclesiastical rulers were dragging their feet. The Archbishopric's copper pfennig issues of this period served the persistent demand for small change in the Rhine-Main region, where fractional coinage perpetually fell short of commercial needs.
Erthal's tenure ended when French Revolutionary forces occupied Mainz in 1792, terminating centuries of ecclesiastical coinage rights in a single campaign season.
