Frederick August I was elevated from Elector to King of Saxony by Napoleon in December 1806, a reward for Saxon support at Jena-Auerstedt. The 1808 coinage was among the first regal issues struck under that new title, reflecting the kingdom's uncomfortable position as a French satellite state within the Confederation of the Rhine.
KM#1062 is a short-lived type; Saxon minor copper coinage was reorganized repeatedly in the Napoleonic period as monetary conventions shifted across the German states.
