Ferdinand II von Fürstenberg governed Paderborn from 1661 until his death in 1683, a tenure marked by ambitious rebuilding after the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. The bishopric's copper pfennig issues of this period were essentially emergency small change — the war had so thoroughly disrupted the regional monetary supply that ecclesiastical mints across Westphalia were pressed into producing base-metal fractions decades after the 1648 peace. Schwede's die pairing classification A/a suggests this is among the earlier die combinations documented for the 1676 emission.
