Obverse description Central shield bearing the rampant Hessian lion, the dynastic arms of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt. The monogram 'HD' (Hessen-Darmstadt), composed of the two capital letters, is placed prominently above the shield. The date of issue appears in the field below the shield.
