Additional information

Ernest Louis ruled Hesse-Darmstadt from 1678 until his death in 1739, and the 1690s were financially punishing years for the landgraviate — the Wars of the Grand Alliance drained German territorial finances relentlessly, and small silver fractions like this pfennig were struck partly to manage the chronic shortage of petty coinage that wartime disruption caused. At 0.15 g, the silver content was nominal at best, and contemporary debasement pressures meant even that figure was optimistic in practice.
