Additional information

Ernest August became King of Hannover in 1837 by immediately revoking the liberal constitution of 1833 — an act so brazen it prompted the famous protest of the Göttingen Seven, a group of professors that included the Brothers Grimm. This coin entered circulation the following year, in the first full minting year of his reign, as the kingdom reasserted its conservative political identity under a monarch who had waited decades as Duke of Cumberland before inheriting the throne.
