Additional information

Ernest Augustus came to the Hanoverian throne in 1837 under immediate controversy — one of his first acts was to abolish the liberal constitution of 1833, triggering the famous protest of the Göttingen Seven, a group of professors that included the Brothers Grimm. The pfennig coinage issued under his reign circulated through a kingdom in genuine political turmoil, its universities purged and its intellectual class scattered across German states.
