Ekbert of Andechs became Bishop of Bamberg in 1203 under a cloud that never fully lifted — his brothers were implicated in the 1208 assassination of King Philip of Swabia, and Ekbert himself fled to Hungary for several years to avoid suspicion. He was eventually cleared and returned to his see, but his long absence and the political disruption almost certainly affected the continuity of mint operations at Bamberg during his episcopate.
The Krug and Bonhoff references place this bracteate-style pfennig firmly within the thin-flan regional coinage characteristic of Franconia in this period, where episcopal minting rights were exercised with considerable autonomy from imperial oversight.
