Eisenach Fahrzeugfabrik — better known today as the origin point of the Wartburg car — issued notgeld coinage during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany after World War I. Private industrial firms across the country filled the gap left by a collapsed state monetary system, producing their own tokens for use within factory canteens and company stores. Zinc was the practical choice: cheap, workable, and already familiar from wartime emergency coinage.
