August Wallmeyer operated as a merchant or tradesman in Eisenach during the Notgeld era, when hundreds of German municipalities and private businesses issued their own emergency coinage to address the chronic small-denomination coin shortage that plagued everyday commerce — particularly acute between 1916 and 1922.
