Eberhard III inherited Württemberg in 1628, mid-Thirty Years' War, with Imperial and Swedish armies repeatedly occupying and plundering the duchy throughout his minority. By the time he assumed personal rule, the territory's economy had been gutted — plague, occupation, and requisitioned grain had reduced the population by roughly a third. Small silver pfennig issues like this one were struck under extraordinarily difficult fiscal conditions, with the duchy's minting operations intermittently disrupted by the war's shifting fronts well into the 1640s.
