The Danziger Zentralkasse AG was established specifically to manage the Free City of Danzig's monetary affairs following the territory's separation from Germany under the Treaty of Versailles. In 1923, with hyperinflation consuming the German Reichsmark and Danzig's own currency under pressure, fractional notes down to the single-Pfennig level became a practical necessity — coins had effectively vanished from circulation.

At this denomination, the notes functioned as pure emergency small change. Few survived in any condition worth noting; the attrition rate on low-value Kleingeld notgeld was severe.
