Charles VI died in October 1740 without a male heir, triggering the War of the Austrian Succession almost immediately. These Graz-minted pfennigs — produced at the Styrian capital's mint throughout the final decade of his reign — were among the last coins issued under the direct Habsburgline before the succession crisis that would reshape central European politics for a generation. The Graz mint had operated continuously since the medieval period, one of the more productive provincial houses in the Habsburg system.
