| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a large ornate Gothic 'C' monogram surmounted by a princely crown with elaborate arched and beaded detailing, representing Landgrave Carl (Charles I) of Hesse-Cassel. The date numerals are disposed around the monogram, with digits placed to the upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right of the crowned cipher, forming the year of issue. The flan is irregular and slightly scalloped at the edges, characteristic of hammered small billon coinage of the period. |
