Cannstatt issued this notgeld pfennig in 1920 as the postwar iron shortage eased but small-denomination coinage from the Reichsbank remained chronically undersupplied in provincial circulation. The Oberamtsbezirk — an administrative district level abolished entirely under Württemberg's 1938 reorganization — had unusually short-lived issuing authority, making municipal pieces from this tier of government scarcer than equivalent city issues. Iron was a deliberate choice at this level: cheaper to procure locally than zinc or aluminum, and politically uncontroversial given Germany's recent wartime associations with both.
