Calw issued this iron notgeld pfennig in 1920 as small-denomination coinage shortages persisted well beyond the armistice — the wartime metal requisitions and mint disruptions that had gutted everyday change from German pockets did not resolve cleanly with peace. Municipal authorities across Württemberg filled the gap themselves, with Calw among dozens of small towns issuing locally sanctioned pieces that held no validity outside their own district boundaries.
