| Obverse description | Frontal bust of Duke Bernhard von Spanheim depicted in high relief, rendered in the flat, stylised Romanesque manner typical of Friesacher Pfennige. The figure is shown from the torso upward, dressed in layered robes with horizontal folds rendered as a series of parallel ridges across the chest. A crescent or orb appears above the head. The legend BERNHARDVS runs along the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan. The overall treatment is bold and schematic, characteristic of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Austrian hammered silver coinage. |
