The Kaufhaus des Westens — KaDeWe — issued private emergency coinage during the acute small-change shortages that plagued Germany in the early 1920s. Retailers and municipalities alike resorted to privately struck iron and aluminum tokens when the Reichsbank could not keep pace with inflationary demand for low-denomination currency. This piece is one such Notgeld substitute, circulating within the store's own commercial ecosystem rather than through any public monetary channel.
