| Beschrijving voorzijde | Quartered shield of arms of the Abbey of Fulda occupying the central field, with the initials BA (for Balthasar von Dernbach, Prince-Abbot) inscribed above the shield. The coat of arms displays the characteristic quartered design incorporating the arms of the abbey, rendered in the crude hammered style typical of small German States pfennig coinage of the early seventeenth century. A beaded or pellet border surrounds the design on the irregular flan. |

Balthasar von Dernbach's tenure as Prince-Abbot of Fulda was anything but stable — he was forcibly expelled by the cathedral chapter in 1576, spent over two decades in exile, and only recovered his seat in 1602 after protracted Imperial intervention. This pfennig belongs to that restored period, struck in the four years between his reinstatement and his death in 1606.
