August the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1635 until his death in 1666, ruled one of the few German territories that emerged from the Thirty Years' War with its finances relatively intact — largely through careful neutrality and shrewd diplomacy. These pfennigs were struck across a twenty-year span that overlapped almost entirely with the enormous task of postwar monetary stabilization in the fragmented Empire, when silver coinage of any denomination carried genuine practical weight.
